PAUL BROWN – “UPTOWN BLUES”

Back by popular demand, Paul Brown and his all star blues band the new CD “uptown blues “ is climbing the charts, and the single “Boogaloo” is number one on Billboard!!!

When you listen to Paul Brown’s all at once cool and heartfelt, guttural and plaintive vocals on his latest masterwork Uptown Blues, it may hit you that all of his success creating urban leaning vibes for himself and the greats of smooth jazz was just a way to bide time until he had a chance to share his true artistry and identity as a blues singer and musician.

While he was scoring over 60 #1 smooth jazz hits as an artist and producer, the guitarist’s musical heart has always been in the blues. His past decade of pushing the boundaries towards the ultimate powerhouse fusion of urban flavored jazz and hardcore, heartfelt blues culminates in his latest Woodward Avenue Records album UPTOWN BLUES. The hipster title of the album and its simmering, easy funk title track – which features frequent collaborator Chris Standring using hypnotic drums and moody organ parts to emotionally underscore Brown’s crisp, fluid lines - comes from Robert Cray’s longtime drummer Tony Braunagel. Brown played the album for Braunagel and he said, “You know, it’s not like straight blues or straight jazz, but more like uptown blues.” It’s the real deal, drawing inspiration from the masters, only with touches of soulful sophistication.

Brown’s longtime genre fans will be happy to know that even as Uptown Blues storms up the Billboard Blues Albums chart, he’s not giving up his (to invoke the name of one of his hit albums) funky joints completely. He’s currently riding high on the smooth jazz charts with “Boogaloo,” a fiery, horn drenched pocket groove driven jam that pulls out all the funk, jazz and blues stops. It feels like a fresh, freewheeling extension of Brown’s #1 hit version of The Crusaders’ “Put it Where You Want It,” sassed up with melodic bits from “Grazin’ in the Grass” and chord changes reminiscent of “Cold Duck Time.” Sort of an old school soul-fusion master class. Tunes like this one and the strutting, brass-tinged, mid-tempo funk gem “Some of This” – featuring spirited interaction with saxophonist Greg Vail - allow Brown to explore his blues chops but in an infectious pop-soul setting.

Yet the emotional core of this most intimate collection lies in the slow burning, blues drenched vocal ballads like the Eric Claptonesque “done me wrong” tune “I’m Good as Gone” and the resigned, mournful “The Love That I Need.” Those are real deal blues tunes that blissfully won’t cross over easily to the smooth charts. One of the strengths of Uptown Blues is that Brown showcases his vulnerabilities as a storyteller while singing the lyrics of others. He was introduced to “I’m Good as Gone,” penned by Bobby Rush, by his friend and longtime collaborator with the same name, called “Brother Paul Brown” to distinguish them. “Brother Paul” plays organ on both “I’m Good As Gone” and “The Love That I Need,” which he wrote for his “brother.” Another solid inclusion on Uptown Blues is Ann Peebles’ Memphis soul classic “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” performed as both a sorrowful vocal and sultry instrumental.

Some of the best stories told on Uptown Blues are actually behind the scenes. The tightly funky, easy struttin’ and brass fired “Blues For Jeff” isn’t simply a tribute to the late guitarist (and friend) Jeff Golub. Brown originally wrote it for Golub under the title of “Hampton Blues,” because Golub had a pad in the Hamptons. As a blues driven jazz guitarist who lived on Long Island, Golub was truly the originator of the Uptown Blues vibe that Brown celebrates here. Perhaps Brown’s most unique choice on the album was to include the deeply felt acoustic driven number “Tomorrow Morning” sung beautifully, almost angelically, by the late great Kenny Rankin as Brown’s blues guitar line pops underneath. The song was recorded as a demo not long after Brown, Rankin and Marc Antoine did some gigs together, but was set aside after Rankin passed away in 2009. Its brilliance is subtle and deserves to be heard.

The same can be said of Uptown Blues’ incredible “outlier” of a tune, “Somebody’s Child,” a painfully personal yet universal message about the struggles of addiction, written and sung by Paul’s multi-talented wife Jacqui Brown, who also plays the haunting piano line. Written from the point of view of the addict on the street trying to find a better day, its inspiration runs very deep for the Browns, as their adult daughter has been struggling with addiction on and off for most of her life. They will be using the song to raise awareness and funds in one of life’s toughest and most necessary battles. Fascinatingly, the Browns have been married some 40 years and Paul was unaware of Jacqui’s singing ability until he heard her tooling around with the song on the piano over and over. It’s a gorgeous, heartrending tune that infuses deeper meaning to the “blues” on a personal level here than any other song on this album.

Overall, Uptown Blues is a collection that takes us uptown, downtown and all the places in between where genuine R&B/soul and urban jazz meets the blues. Brown grew up listening to and playing the blues and this album is his deepest exploration of his truest heart yet.

Peter Asher and Albert Lee

As one half of Peter & Gordon, Peter Asher's voice "literally soared through Carnegie Hall" (Fox News), while Albert Lee has been called "the ultimate virtuoso" by Eric Clapton. Influenced from their earliest days as musicians and performers by great American artists like Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers, Peter Asher and Albert Lee bring those influences to the fore in their first series of shows together as an acoustic duo.

Albert Lee began his career as a touring musician in the early sixties and soon catapulted onto the stage with the likes of Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, and Emmylou Harris. A 25 year run as Music Director of his beloved Everly Brothers coincided with studio and stage work with Vince Gill, Roseanne Cash, and also Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr ("The Concert for George"). Even with all this, he found the time for over 10 solo and band albums under his own moniker. His numerous studio sessions have led to 4 Grammy Awards nominations and two awards.

We came to know Peter Asher via 10 Top 40 hits with Peter & Gordon, whose debut "A World Without Love" topped the charts in the U.S., U.K., and over 30 other countries. His days as A & R Director for the Beatles' Apple Records made history, and he became a legend as Producer and Manager of James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and a host of others. He remains the only Artist Manager to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and his studio work has led to two Grammy Awards for "Producer of the Year".

Theirs is a history of song, and these duo shows will reflect that history. From the Peter & Gordon catalog, Peter Asher and Albert Lee will harmonize on "World Without Love", I Go To Pieces", and more. From Albert Lee's back pages, expect the Jimmy Webb penned title track from his new acoustic album, "The Highwayman", Glenn Campbell's " A Better Place", and the Jimmy Jones/Otis Blackwell classic "Handy Man". Inspirations to both artists such as the Everly Brothers provide "Crying in the Rain" and "Bye Bye Love", while from Buddy Holly comes " Well, All Right". As Peter & Albert tell us stories of the travels that brought them to so many of the intersections of music history, the two legends bring these timeless songs to life.

Here's World Without Love, in a live benefit performance at Craxton Studios, London...

Judith Owen’s live performances, whether as a headliner or as the handpicked opening act for Bryan Ferry’s recent tours of Europe and North America, have
been wowing listeners and gaining fans like fellow artist Jackson Browne. Judith is a seasoned performing artist and co-founder of Twanky Records with
her husband, Harry Shearer. Riding high from the critical acclaim for her latest album, “redisCOVERed” released this past May, the
singer/songwriter/pianist and London born recording artist is back in the U.S. after touring the UK and much of Europe including Sweden, Norway, Germany,
Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and more.

“RedisCOVERed" is a collection of carefully chosen cover tunes including Deep Purple’s "Smoke On The Water", Soundgarden’s "Black Hole Sun", Donna
Summer’s "Hot Stuff", Wild Cherry’s "Play That Funky Music", a few contemporary selections including Drake’s "Hotline Bling", Ed Sheeran’s
"Shape Of You", and a couple Joni Mitchell‘s more obscure tunes "Cherokee Louise" and "Ladies' Man". Owen makes these songs her own. She molds the
familiar melodies and lyrics to contemporary pop hits and longtime favorites to her unmistakable voice and style. Owen describes her album redisCOVERed
like this: “These are great songs that I’ve deconstructed and re-claimed or simply found my life and new meaning in the lyrics.”

Owen’s arrangements breathe fresh life into familiar songs recording with Grammy® winning co-producer/mixer/engineer David Bianco (Tom Petty, Bob
Dylan, Meghan Trainor) and some sharp musical talent including legendary bassist Leland Sklar (James Taylor, Carole King, Leonard Cohen) and master
percussionist Pedro Segundo, both key members of Judith’s live band. The album includes notable contributions from Paul Beard (Bryan Ferry, James
Blunt), George Shelby (Phil Collins, Bette Midler), Snarky Puppy member Michael ‘Maz’ Maher, Grammy® winning jazz trumpeter Nicholas Payton and
her dazzling London string players; longtime cellist collaborator Gabriella Swallow and violinist Lizzie Ball (Nigel Kennedy, Jeff Beck).

Judith will be joined by bass legend Leland Sklar whose discography speaks for itself playing on over 2500 albums including James Taylor, Jackson Browne,
Linda Ronstadt, Lyle Lovett, Phil Collins, Billy Cobham, and many more, and special guest George Shelby on saxophone.

What’s been said about Judith Owen….

“This firebrand singer, songwriter, pianist and raconteur is currently riding the wave of a tremendous couple of years. Her previous album,
Somebody’s Child was adored by critics around the world with The Sunday Times selecting it as one of the best records of 2016, and Analog Planet said
that it “sparkles with Owen’s witty energy” noting that “the songs will stay with you long after the record ends”.

The Hailers’ music will give you a sense of familiarity, taking the best elements of melodic rock and bringing it into 2018 with a bang... You hear the Celtic influences of Simple Minds, harmonies of Fleetwood Mac, and the sultry psychedelic rock of Pink Floyd.

Robert “Lordhailer” Mills is the founding member and the drive behind the band. The Hailers originate from Cardiff, Wales where Robert has established an extensive list of album credits, television and featured films including performances with John Kay & Steppenwolf, Taj Mahal, Meic Stevens, Killing Time, National Anthem and Red Sharks. He was also the winning recipient of the Welsh Rock & Pop Awards for three consecutive years. The band’s British lineup had formerly included members from Mott the Hoople, Roger Daltrey, Dave Edmunds, Lone Star and Alex Harvey .

The current American musical lineage of The Hailers features artists such as Scott Page on saxophone; known for his work with Pink Floyd, Supertramp & Toto; Brian Chatton on keyboards, whose credits include Meatloaf, Phil Collins & Eric Burden; Billy DiBlasi on drums, who has worked with Jack Wagner, John Schneider and Buck Page; Ron Guzek, who collaborated on tracks alongside Jon Anderson of YES & Bella Fleck; April Carson on bass, known for her presence in Misguided and Ron Keel’s Fair Game; and Patti Smith, backing vocals for The Marshall Tucker Band and the Allman Brothers.
