This six-piece band features Leslie Smith and the remarkable Sara Niemietz sharing lead vocal duties, and veteran film composer and studio musician W.G. 'Snuffy' Walden on guitar. The music has a pop jazz feel with bluesy overtones. Niemietz is a revelation, trading lines with Smith’s voice and Walden’s guitar. She is a classy veteran performer who electrifies an audience. Walden’s soaring guitar work demonstrates his virtuosity and reminds us that before he wrote music for Thirtysomething, The Wonder Years, The West Wing and Friday Night Lights, he was an accomplished session guitarist backing artists like Stevie Wonder, the late Donna Summer, and Chaka Khan.

Music Night at Bogies | CAB w/ BUNNY BRUNEL (Cover $20)

There is a fine line between genius and insanity.  This musical GENIUS who puts out INSANE music executes pulsating rhythms on his bass with scary accuracy, flawless precision, and hauntingly beautiful melodies. Bunny Brunel is the jazz fusion version of the “closest thing to heaven” you’ll ever get with a talent that is simply . . . other-worldly!

A seed is planted—a movement is created; and behind that movement, the greatest minds exist.  When it comes to the bass, Bunny Brunel is the gardener and one of those great minds.  From defining his signature style on fretless, upright, and electric basses, to authoring numerous instructional books on bass technique and theory, there is no end to Brunel’s musical mind.  But how many legendary virtuoso instrumentalists do you know who not only design their instruments, but build them, too?  Having designed for Carvin for over 25 years, Brunel is now a designer for ESP Guitars.  He also created and custom built the Rolls Royce of basses—the Bunny Brunel Electric Upright Bass(BBEUB). As if that weren’t enough, Bunny has composed music with lush arrangements on his releases from the start of his career on his first album Touch to his latest, titled Bass Ball; and somewhere in the middle, his Band CAB earned a Grammy nomination for CAB 2 – Best Contemporary Jazz Album; and early in Brunel’s career as a member of Chick Corea’s Band, Secret Agent received a Grammy nomination. The endlessly talented Bunny Brunel also scores films, and collaborated and performed the theme for Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning masterpiece The Unforgiven.  But most importantly, Bunny is known around the world as one of the four great bassists who started the jazz-fusion bass movement along with Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, and Jeff Berlin.

Born in the South of France, Bunny Brunel’s first instrument was the piano, and because his mother was a huge jazz fan, he was exposed to jazz at a very young age. He was able to play jazz chords by ear.

“While I was attending a specialized college for hotels, I found a classical guitar where the headstock was broken. I had it remade by a cabinetmaker friend of mine and played guitar in a band. I was about 15 years old at the time. I knew about 3 or 4 chords and that’s how it started. I was asked to rent a bass for a new bass player who never showed up for rehearsal and ended up playing the bass. That was the day I became a bass player—and I loved it!” —Bunny Brunel

Bunny attended the Classical Conservatory in Nice, France, to learn bowing technique, but was mostly a self-taught bass player who drew his influences from Sam Jones, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Eddy Gomez, Miroslav Vitous, and Stanley Clarke.

In his early 20s, while playing at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s Club in London with Tania Maria, Yes/Moody Blues keyboardist Patrick Moraz introduced Bunny to fusion keyboardist Chick Corea. Once Chick heard Bunny play, a few months later he hired him to record on his album Secret Agent. Bunny played with Chick Corea for almost a decade, and has since played with Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Ziggy Marley, Gloria Estefan, Jack De Johnette, Natalie Cole, Stanley Clarke, Milt Jackson, Steve Grossman, and more. Bunny Brunel is a rare musician. He makes his bass sing.

Patrick Moraz of Yes and Moody Blues when he first met Bunny Brunel back in 1978:
“There are really only four real [fusion] bass players: Jaco Pastorius, Jeff Berlin, Stanley Clarke, and you, Bunny Brunel!”

Taking an active interest in helping bass players, Brunel regularly gives seminars on his unique approach to the instrument. He has written several books available through Mel Bay Publications, Hal Leonard Publications, as well as instruction DVDs. He performs regularly, and is part of a new group called iNow, a trio with Patrick Moraz (Yes, Moody Blues) and Virgil Donati.

A melodic writer, Bunny Brunel always found it necessary to create memorable melodic overtones fused with modal changes and dexterous playing. Hearing his music transcends most recordings from the fusion genre simply because even after listening and being blown away by the execution and profound changes—as complex as his music is—you walk away humming his melodies. But you are cheating yourself if you haven’t seen him perform. Experiencing Bunny Brunel live in concert is transformative as well as spiritual. Nothing compares to the auditory sensory fulfillment when you drink in a performance by this masterful bass sorcerer!

Music Night at Bogies | Lindsey Webster (cover $15)

October 11, 2018

THURSDAY | October 11, 2018 | 7:30pm | Music Night at Bogies | Lindsey Webster (cover $15)

BUY TICKETS HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lindsey-webster-tickets-50050651847

"The earthy, charismatic and beautiful Lindsey Webster is a surprising and welcomed anomaly in the contemporary jazz world. The sultry and soulful young singer/composer, who has scored two Billboard #1’s on the Contemporary Jazz Chart, making her the first vocalist in the format to garner a #1 since the iconic Sade, is still amazed by her own success. “It is unbelievable that it is really happening” says Webster. “But now that it has, I feel like my world and career have opened up and that it is only the beginning!” Blessed with a honey-toned voice and enviable range, Webster’s uniquely identifiable sound is fueled by potent messages of love that are timely for today’s climate. Webster is holding her own in a largely male dominated genre comprised of artists who are much older than her and she is quickly becoming a favorite on the charts and international touring circuit. Her sophomore Shanachie recording, Love Inside, is about realizing the power that each of us possess as individuals.  “So frequently, we are looking outside of ourselves for the answers, when most of the time, we need to address what is within, first” states Webster. “I thought it to be an appropriate title for this album with all of the negativity and animosity that runs rampant in today’s world." Through a tapestry of twelve evocative originals that fuse the best elements of R&B, jazz, pop and soul, Webster explores the world of love and loss in relationships as well as the love needed to unite and honor one another’s humanity.

David Garfield has had the same mission statement since moving from his hometown of St. Louis to Los Angeles as a teenager in the early 70s: “I make music.” Fully living up to this vision and in more expansive ways over the past few decades, the multi-talented keyboardist and musical Renaissance Man has established himself an eclectic force in popular music. At any given point during his career—and often at the same time—he has been a renowned songwriter, producer, bandleader (of Los Angeles based contemporary world jazz collective Karizma), arranger, recording artist, record label owner (Creatchy Records), session and touring musician, musical director and composer of various commissioned themes for global organizations.

Reflecting on his extraordinary, diverse career, the Los Angeles based Garfield says, “It’s creatively invigorating to have the opportunity to do so many interesting musical projects, to see so many amazing places throughout the world, and to work with some of the greatest musicians both in L.A. and overseas. I feel as though I am always learning from the artists and musicians I work with, not simply on a musical level, but also benefiting from their wealth of stories and life and career experiences. There are always unexpected thrills along the way, from opening with his band for Sergio Mendez or Jason Mraz to recording in a studio next to Paul McCartney or Alice in Chains and having the opportunity to meet and get to know them. I love being involved in so many different aspects of music and the feeling that I truly never know what’s coming up next.”

Music Night at Bogies | VENICE (cover VIP $35 / GA $25)

October 21, 2018

SUNDAY | October 21, 2018 | 6pm & 8pm | Music Night at Bogies | VENICE (cover VIP $35 / GA $25)

BUY TICKETS HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/venice-tickets-50840477236

VENICE - Marky & Kipp Lennon, Michael & Pat Lennon and the band, featuring Mark Harris on bass, Chris Horvath on keys, and Matt Laug on drums, will be back at Bogies for a special night of great music and celebration. They are doing 2 shows. 6:00pm and 8:00pm. Please make your reservations early because both shows are likely to SELL OUT!

VENICE is a band from Venice Beach, California that consists of two sets of brothers: Michael and Mark Lennon, and their cousins, Kipp and Pat Lennon. As a band, the Lennons have recorded and performed together since the 1980s. Their music reflects many of their influences while growing up in the small, eclectic and culturally diverse beach town for which they are named. Venice’s sound is at once familiar and fresh, their classic rock and folk influences apparent in their pop sensibilities. Their hybrid of folk/rock/soul is relevant, alive and still growing, with many fans worldwide considering them the torchbearers of the Southern California, west coast sound. Venice’s trademarks are their vocal harmonies, (reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash or the Eagles), their personal lyrics, and their communal live shows; their live show is just as effective whether acoustic in an intimate theatre or an electric show with their full band at sprawling outdoor festivals.

Their distinctive vocal sound has allowed Venice and its members to perform and/or record with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Bon Jovi, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Brian Wilson, Elton John, Cher, Heart, Michael McDonald, Ozzy Osborne, Billy Idol, America, and the list goes on. The Lennons spent most of 2010-2013 as backing vocalists on the 219 show worldwide arena and stadium tour of Roger Waters “The Wall”. Venice was invited to contribute a track on the 2014 CD “Looking Into You: A Tribute to Jackson Browne”, joining such artists as Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Ben Harper and Lyle Lovett.

For almost twenty years, Venice has enjoyed a great level of success in the Netherlands, where their harmonies and musicality are considered a modern extension of what many Europeans call “West Coast Music”. Venice continues to cultivate their reputation overseas and share a longstanding friendship with their audiences, where their post-show meet & greets can sometimes last nearly as long as the shows. “The fans are what make everything possible”, says Venice’s lead guitarist and producer, Michael, “and we don’t forget that.”

“We stay after every show to shake hands, take photos.”, says Michael’s brother Marky. Lead vocalist Kipp adds, “We’ve watched so many bands come and go. They have a hit song on the radio, or they're hot for a few years then they break up. We just slowly chug along making albums, touring...and living our lives. We’ve got bills, children, and all the responsibilities that regular people have...and Venice is not a steady income...but it's what we love to do so we forge ahead”. Kipp’s brother Pat chimes in, “We’re fortunate enough to make our records in our own home studio, then travel half way across the globe to perform our music and make new friends around the world at the same time. It doesn't suck.” 2018 promises more audiences to conquer and more new music to bring to their ever-growing international family of fans. For more info, go to VeniceTheBand.com.

Music Night at Bogies | trioKAIT (no cover)

October 23, 2018

TUESDAY | October 23, 2018 | 7:30pm | Music Night at Bogies | trioKAIT (no cover)

KAIT DUNTON is a Los Angeles based composer & pianist with an unconventional approach to composition and to the piano trio, best expressed by her genre-pushing super group, trioKAIT. Together with bassist Cooper Appelt and drummer Jake Reed, trioKAIT brings a modern, tight and groovy sound to the piano trio format, shuffling wide-ranging influences and Kait’s innovative compositions into a refreshingly modern take on instrumental music that is as uncategorizable as it is infectious. Fused together via Kait’s music, the trio melds into a laser-focused single entity with a dynamic group sound.

Kait has produced and released four albums of original compositions, with a fifth featuring her inventive arranging style. DownBeat awarded 4.5 stars to Kait’s latest album, trioKAIT 2, writing that “Dunton brings a Technicolor sensibility to everything she touches.” In 2017, trioKAIT Casual reached #5 on the Jazz Week radio charts, while her debut album, Real & Imagined, continues to draw fans, now with over 1.5 million streams on Spotify. Her third record, trioKAIT, made the Huffington Post’s list of “The Best Jazz for 2015” while her second album, Mountain Suite, features master interpreters Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, John Daversa and Darek Oles. Prior to this, Kait was a member of Snarky Puppy during their formative years in Texas, appearing on their sophomore record, The World is Getting Smaller.

Kait has been recognized on Jazz.com as one of “10 Future Female Jazz Stars” and described by critic Don Heckman as “an extraordinary talent on the rise” with “impressive compositional skills”. Something Else! Reviews writes that “[Kait] throws cold water on any notion that the piano/bass/drums format is an exhausted one. It’s very much alive and well, and here is all the proof you need…” In addition to composition and performance, Kait is also an active educator, heading the Piano Performance program at the Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) in Pasadena, California.

"A confluence of the classic piano trio, and space-aged funk and fusion." - DownBeat

“Thrilling and original... a new kind of jazz trio demonstrates that 21st century jazz can be subtle and soulful at the same time.” - PopMatters
