Meet Tin Drum, an ensemble of musicians bringing an invigorating freshness to contemporary music by exploring themes that fall outside of well-worn trends. The band’s nucleus is the husband-wife team of Burleigh Drummond and Mary Harris. They are two veterans who continue to thrive with their current project as strong, experienced singing and songwriting partners. Drummond was the founding drummer of progressive pop-rock group Ambrosia, a band that helped define the sound of popular music in the 1970s and 80s with a string of hits and five subsequent Grammy nominations. Drummond wears many musical hats now, playing drums, percussion, and acoustic guitar as well as providing vocals. Harris is a singer/songwriter who has honed her skills on the road and in the studio, working with the top acts of Pink Floyd, XTC, Stanley Clarke, and Jimmy Buffet. Now she provides the voice of Tin Drum and plays keyboards for the band. Enhancing the ensemble are John Davis on bass  and Marc Bonilla on guitar, mandolin, and vocals… musicians who embrace and help to further define Tin Drum’s musical philosophy.

This Southern California based band has released three CDs: Real World (1995), Small Parade (2001) and Where Have You Been? (2009). Each album captures the musical passions of the group with their intimate and personal style. A deeper exploration reveals rich, complex arrangements and a mature look at the world that is revealed through lyrics that reflect both the ethereal content of dreams and the concrete issues of everyday living. Each individual track stands alone as an example of a gifted composition as well as a compelling layer of a greater musical structure. http://www.tindrummusic.com

Music Night at Bogies | PAUL BROWN & FRIENDS With Special Guest Jacqui Brown (cover $30)

Special Guest Jacqui Brown will be sitting in for a few songs

PAUL BROWN & FRIENDS – “UPTOWN BLUES”

Back by popular demand, Paul Brown and his all star blues band the new CD “uptown blues “ is climbing the charts, and the single “Boogaloo” is number one on Billboard!!!

When you listen to Paul Brown’s all at once cool and heartfelt, guttural and plaintive vocals on his latest masterwork Uptown Blues, it may hit you that all of his success creating urban leaning vibes for himself and the greats of smooth jazz was just a way to bide time until he had a chance to share his true artistry and identity as a blues singer and musician.

While he was scoring over 60 #1 smooth jazz hits as an artist and producer, the guitarist’s musical heart has always been in the blues. His past decade of pushing the boundaries towards the ultimate powerhouse fusion of urban flavored jazz and hardcore, heartfelt blues culminates in his latest Woodward Avenue Records album UPTOWN BLUES. The hipster title of the album and its simmering, easy funk title track – which features frequent collaborator Chris Standring using hypnotic drums and moody organ parts to emotionally underscore Brown’s crisp, fluid lines - comes from Robert Cray’s longtime drummer Tony Braunagel. Brown played the album for Braunagel and he said, “You know, it’s not like straight blues or straight jazz, but more like uptown blues.” It’s the real deal, drawing inspiration from the masters, only with touches of soulful sophistication.

Brown’s longtime genre fans will be happy to know that even as Uptown Blues storms up the Billboard Blues Albums chart, he’s not giving up his (to invoke the name of one of his hit albums) funky joints completely. He’s currently riding high on the smooth jazz charts with “Boogaloo,” a fiery, horn drenched pocket groove driven jam that pulls out all the funk, jazz and blues stops. It feels like a fresh, freewheeling extension of Brown’s #1 hit version of The Crusaders’ “Put it Where You Want It,” sassed up with melodic bits from “Grazin’ in the Grass” and chord changes reminiscent of “Cold Duck Time.” Sort of an old school soul-fusion master class. Tunes like this one and the strutting, brass-tinged, mid-tempo funk gem “Some of This” – featuring spirited interaction with saxophonist Greg Vail - allow Brown to explore his blues chops but in an infectious pop-soul setting.

Yet the emotional core of this most intimate collection lies in the slow burning, blues drenched vocal ballads like the Eric Claptonesque “done me wrong” tune “I’m Good as Gone” and the resigned, mournful “The Love That I Need.” Those are real deal blues tunes that blissfully won’t cross over easily to the smooth charts. One of the strengths of Uptown Blues is that Brown showcases his vulnerabilities as a storyteller while singing the lyrics of others. He was introduced to “I’m Good as Gone,” penned by Bobby Rush, by his friend and longtime collaborator with the same name, called “Brother Paul Brown” to distinguish them. “Brother Paul” plays organ on both “I’m Good As Gone” and “The Love That I Need,” which he wrote for his “brother.” Another solid inclusion on Uptown Blues is Ann Peebles’ Memphis soul classic “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” performed as both a sorrowful vocal and sultry instrumental.

Some of the best stories told on Uptown Blues are actually behind the scenes. The tightly funky, easy struttin’ and brass fired “Blues For Jeff” isn’t simply a tribute to the late guitarist (and friend) Jeff Golub. Brown originally wrote it for Golub under the title of “Hampton Blues,” because Golub had a pad in the Hamptons. As a blues driven jazz guitarist who lived on Long Island, Golub was truly the originator of the Uptown Blues vibe that Brown celebrates here. Perhaps Brown’s most unique choice on the album was to include the deeply felt acoustic driven number “Tomorrow Morning” sung beautifully, almost angelically, by the late great Kenny Rankin as Brown’s blues guitar line pops underneath. The song was recorded as a demo not long after Brown, Rankin and Marc Antoine did some gigs together, but was set aside after Rankin passed away in 2009. Its brilliance is subtle and deserves to be heard.

The same can be said of Uptown Blues’ incredible “outlier” of a tune, “Somebody’s Child,” a painfully personal yet universal message about the struggles of addiction, written and sung by Paul’s multi-talented wife Jacqui Brown, who also plays the haunting piano line. Written from the point of view of the addict on the street trying to find a better day, its inspiration runs very deep for the Browns, as their adult daughter has been struggling with addiction on and off for most of her life. They will be using the song to raise awareness and funds in one of life’s toughest and most necessary battles. Fascinatingly, the Browns have been married some 40 years and Paul was unaware of Jacqui’s singing ability until he heard her tooling around with the song on the piano over and over. It’s a gorgeous, heartrending tune that infuses deeper meaning to the “blues” on a personal level here than any other song on this album.

Overall, Uptown Blues is a collection that takes us uptown, downtown and all the places in between where genuine R&B/soul and urban jazz meets the blues. Brown grew up listening to and playing the blues and this album is his deepest exploration of his truest heart yet.

The Wrecking Crew was a loose collective of “go to” Los Angeles based session musicians who played on literally thousands of studio recordings in the 1960s & early 1970s, including several hundred Top 40 hits by legendary artists as diverse as Jan & Dean, the Grass Roots, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, Nancy Sinatra, the Partridge Family, David Cassidy, the Carpenters, John Denver, Nat King Cole, and of course, Glen Campbell. They worked with dozens of top producers including Lou Adler, Mike Post, and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, who also co-wrote many of their most famous tracks, and used the Wrecking Crew's talents extensively in the mid-1960s on songs such as "Help Me, Rhonda", "California Girls", "Good Vibrations," and several album projects including Pet Sounds (1966), and the original sessions for Smile.

Glen Campbell became a touring member of The Beach Boys from December 1964 to March 1965, filling in for Brian Wilson, playing bass, and singing falsetto harmonies. He played guitar on the Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds, among other recordings. In 1968, Campbell released "Wichita Lineman", a song written by the great songwriter Jimmy Webb. It was recorded with backing from members of the Wrecking Crew and appeared on his 1968 album of the same name. It reached No. 3 on the U.S. pop charts and remained in the Top 100 for 15 weeks. The song also topped the American country music chart for 2 weeks and the adult contemporary chart for 6 weeks. In 1975, Glen Campbell released his thirtieth album, Rhinestone Cowboy, and the song by the same name became Campbell's largest-selling single (and one of his best-known recordings). "Rhinestone Cowboy" continues to be used in TV shows & films, including Desperate Housewives, Daddy Day Care, and High School High, and was the inspiration for the 1984 Dolly Parton/Sylvester Stallone movie Rhinestone. Campbell won numerous music awards including Grammys for “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “I’m Not Gonna Miss You”, nominations for “Wichita Lineman” and “Rhinestone Cowboy”, American Music Awards, and Country Music Awards. Glen’s musical career was second to none.

In June 2011, Glen Campbell announced the devastating news that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. In 2014 Campbell was featured in the documentary I'LL BE ME which examined Alzheimer's and its effect on his musical performances during his final tour across the US with his wife & family. Campbell died on August 8, 2017 at age 81 in Nashville, TN. His legacy lives on through the incredible music he left us.

David Garfield has had the same mission statement since moving from his hometown of St. Louis to Los Angeles as a teenager in the early 70s: “I make music.” Fully living up to this vision and in more expansive ways over the past few decades, the multi-talented keyboardist and musical Renaissance Man has established himself an eclectic force in popular music. At any given point during his career—and often at the same time—he has been a renowned songwriter, producer, bandleader (of Los Angeles based contemporary world jazz collective Karizma), arranger, recording artist, record label owner (Creatchy Records), session and touring musician, musical director and composer of various commissioned themes for global organizations.

Reflecting on his extraordinary, diverse career, the Los Angeles based Garfield says, “It’s creatively invigorating to have the opportunity to do so many interesting musical projects, to see so many amazing places throughout the world, and to work with some of the greatest musicians both in L.A. and overseas. I feel as though I am always learning from the artists and musicians I work with, not simply on a musical level, but also benefiting from their wealth of stories and life and career experiences. There are always unexpected thrills along the way, from opening with his band for Sergio Mendez or Jason Mraz to recording in a studio next to Paul McCartney or Alice in Chains and having the opportunity to meet and get to know them. I love being involved in so many different aspects of music and the feeling that I truly never know what’s coming up next.”

CARLOS CALVO

With a storied two decades under his belt as Hollywood’s go-to guitar coach, Calvo continues to flip the traditional script by injecting something fresh into his brand of Alternative Folk that’s been absent from the genre at large: virtuoso guitar playing. With jazz guitar icon Al Di Meola as a childhood neighbor, Carlos grew up surrounded by world-famous guitarists. At age 7, he began an 11-year curriculum at Carnegie Hall with classical and flamenco great Juan de la Mata, a close associate to flamenco guitar legend, Sabicas. Having mastered compositions by Segovia, Bach, and Barrios, he moved from New York City to Hollywood, enrolling at Musicians Institute under the tutelage of legendary Wrecking Crew session player Tommy Tedesco (Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra). While these visionary icons had a profound impact on his musical development, he also counts The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Philip Glass and the soulful music emanating from Muscle Shoals as influences and inspiration.

In addition to composing/producing original music, Carlos teaches guitar privately and counts Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, actress Marg Helgenberger (CSI, China Beach, Under The Dome), actor Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure, Numb3rs, The Bucket List) and Brody, wife of actor Adrian Brody, as students. He also regularly coaches actors to portray musicians; most notably David Duchovny for Californication, Ambyr Childers for Ray Donovan, Gethin Anthony (Aquarius) and David Oyelowo, who played the Muddy Waters character in the film, Who Do You Love. He was also tapped as a coach for the acclaimed James Brown biopic Get On Up, which was produced by Mick Jagger and stars Viola Davis, Aloe Blacc, Jill Scott and Dan Ackroyd. He played guitar on the score of King of the Hill for three seasons and has had songs placed in the hit Freeform/ABC Family show, The Fosters, as well as major motion pictures She’s All That and Finding Holden.

Before embarking on his solo career, Carlos fronted successful bands that toured with Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Willie Porter. As a solo artist, he has toured with The Bacon Brothers and Colin Hay and numerous times in Europe as a headliner, while also musical director and co-writer for the Rob Morrow Band, who play Bogie’s regularly. His most recent album, Further Down The Line, is a 12-song exposition on life and love which the Washington Times dubbed “Sheer mastery.” This will be his debut Bogie’s performance with his own band. Lots of tasty solos are on the horizon.

MAUREEN TOTH

Born and raised in Huntington Station, New York, Toth attended Boston University where she studied voice and began to develop her range. After getting her degree she attended theatre school in Manhattan and then relocated to the Bay Area, where she continued to pursue her musical interests before transplanting to Los Angeles in 2000. Once in L.A., she stepped into the vibrant singer-songwriter scene and met Bernie Larsen, a renowned touring guitarist for Lucinda Williams, Melissa Etheridge, Rickie Lee Jones, Jackson Browne and a member of David Lindley's El Rayo-X. The two began collaborating which resulted in the 2004 album, Deven Kay and 2010’s, Shine, a ten-song master work of nuanced Americana and lyric driven melodies. Cut Flowers, an introspective EP produced by Jim McGorman (Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani, Michelle Branch, Kate Voegele), followed in 2016, with BLUR, a road-ready, rock-leaning co-production with Carlos Calvo (David Duchovny, Rob Morrow, Adam Levine) and Paul Smith (Lucinda Williams, A Fine Frenzy, Bright Eyes) releasing in May 2019.

Over the course of the past year, Toth, Calvo and Smith dialed into something transformative, producing five distinctive and satisfying songs exploring humanity, touching on tough subjects that highlight the human condition, and blending the folk and rock genres. Eschewing the more folk-infused sound of Cut Flowers, Toth felt BLUR demanded a more powerful sound. On the bright Tom Petty stroll of the title track, Toth explores that strange state between sleeping and awake, the living and the dead and bridging that gap or blurring those lines reaching for someone you have lost while closing track, the free-flowing “Island,” is a jangly 6-minute jam that rides straight into the breaking sunrise.

Championed by Women of Substance Radio, the inherent quality in Toth's forthright material has drawn comparisons to Patty Griffin, Joni Mitchell, and Shelby Lynne. Review Fix declared her material to be "charming coffee house concoctions, warm and full of spice” akin to Sara Bareilles, while Yahoo! Voices applauded the "beautiful storytelling” that "whisks you away like an instant getaway."

Aside from her songwriter’s endeavors, Toth owns and runs Eastern Talent, a successful below the line talent agency in Los Angeles that reps Editors, Cinematographers, Production Designers, and Costume Designers for film and television. Her clients' work on feature films include projects like The Descendants, 22 Jump Street, and Love Simon and narrative television such as Verdon Fosse, The Romanoffs, and True Detective.

For her debut appearance at Bogie’s, Toth will have Calvo on lead guitar, Dave Sutton, from Lucinda Williams’ band, on bass, vocalist Lora Ball, and drummer Marc Slutsky.

Serendipitous is an adjective that describes accidentally being in the right place at the right time, like bumping into a good friend in some unusual location, or finding a hundred dollar bill on the ground. The word could also be used well in describing the inception of the band ZFG. Within its ranks you'll find seasoned songwriters and performers of which you may be familiar, but sometimes the sum of the parts is beyond expectations and lends itself to being genre defining.

“You guys are better musicians than KISS will ever be and you sound like you could be the next QUEEN.” - Gene Simmons

Based in Los Angeles, ZFG consists of Trev Lukather (son of legendary guitarist Steve Lukather and founding member of Toto), bassist Sam Porcaro (son of original bassist for Toto, Mike Porcaro), drummer Josh Devine of One Direction, and stellar vocalist Jules Galli.

The members were close friends in different projects, but decided to get into the studio for fun with a new approach in mind, making music with no rules or boundaries. “Zero F**ks Given” is what they called their first day in the studio, which led to their band name ZFG. After writing and recording together on day one, the chemistry was undeniable, so the decision was made to forge their individual projects into one. By melding anthemic, hook-filled melodies within funk rock guitar riffs and groove rock beats, the band shows their ability to compact a vast array of influence and experience into a signature sound with substance, style, and soul.

“Having released two songs already, 'Holehearted' and 'Special' it is now apparent just how good that chemistry is. Funk rock grooves and infectious backing vocals are just the first things to jump out at you. These guys can play. Of course when you carry the last name of rock royalty (Lukather and Porcaro) or come from a massive band like One Direction (Devine), people expect good things. These guys deliver that in spades.”

As serendipitous as the making of the band may have been, ZFG runs with a different mindset when approaching the music they write by not restricting themselves to purely rock-style songs. ZFG's music is infused in alternative, pop, R&B and a hybrid of other styles.

ZFG's radio campaign recently launched for their single “Special” and was officially released on April 26th on Spotify and all platforms via Cleopatra Records. “Special” landed #2MOST ADDED spot on the Billboard (BDS) Mainstream Rock Indicator Chart and grabbed the coveted #1 MOST ADDED spot on the Foundations (SMR) Chart. “Special” lands among the Top 10 Greatest Gainers on BOTH the Billboard Indicator & Foundations Chart!

The band is just back from a successful month long European tour opening for Toto. Fans can get a taste of their upcoming EP with the release of a lyric video for their single, “Special” on YouTube.
