This six-piece band features Leslie Smith and the remarkable Sara Niemietz sharing lead vocal duties, and veteran film composer and studio musician W.G. 'Snuffy' Walden on guitar. The music has a pop jazz feel with bluesy overtones. Niemietz is a revelation, trading lines with Smith’s voice and Walden’s guitar. She is a classy veteran performer who electrifies an audience. Walden’s soaring guitar work demonstrates his virtuosity and reminds us that before he wrote music for Thirtysomething, The Wonder Years, The West Wing and Friday Night Lights, he was an accomplished session guitarist backing artists like Stevie Wonder, the late Donna Summer, and Chaka Khan.

David Garfield has had the same mission statement since moving from his hometown of St. Louis to Los Angeles as a teenager in the early 70s: “I make music.” Fully living up to this vision and in more expansive ways over the past few decades, the multi-talented keyboardist and musical Renaissance Man has established himself an eclectic force in popular music. At any given point during his career—and often at the same time—he has been a renowned songwriter, producer, bandleader (of Los Angeles based contemporary world jazz collective Karizma), arranger, recording artist, record label owner (Creatchy Records), session and touring musician, musical director and composer of various commissioned themes for global organizations.

Reflecting on his extraordinary, diverse career, the Los Angeles based Garfield says, “It’s creatively invigorating to have the opportunity to do so many interesting musical projects, to see so many amazing places throughout the world, and to work with some of the greatest musicians both in L.A. and overseas. I feel as though I am always learning from the artists and musicians I work with, not simply on a musical level, but also benefiting from their wealth of stories and life and career experiences. There are always unexpected thrills along the way, from opening with his band for Sergio Mendez or Jason Mraz to recording in a studio next to Paul McCartney or Alice in Chains and having the opportunity to meet and get to know them. I love being involved in so many different aspects of music and the feeling that I truly never know what’s coming up next.”

Music Night at Bogies | Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the 60's and Beyond (Ticket $35)

October 14, 2019

MONDAY | October 14, 2019 | 7:30pm | Music Night at Bogies | Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the 60's and Beyond (Ticket $35) **two drink minimum required with ticket purchase**

“…as Mr. Asher regaled a delighted audience with stories… he conjured history in the making, before it was set in stone.” – Stephen Holden, New York Times

“…the exuberant Mr. Asher knew anyone who rocked and everyone who mattered.” –Wall Street Journal

“An all-around charming and delightful fellow — he reminisces about his whole career and it is highly entertaining” – Steve Martin

“Everybody should go and see it — I’ve seen it myself twice” – Linda Ronstadt

"The Man, The Myth, The Legend! ...and a true friend! Great wit and music. A true storyteller! What more could you possibly want? Don’t miss this!"--Hans Zimmer

We first came to know him through the global smash “World Without Love” as one half of the British Invasion duo Peter & Gordon. He returns--now a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire-- in “Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the 60s and Beyond” which brings a multimedia experience to the stage, hosted by the two-time Grammy winner for Producer of the Year. Peter Asher moved effortlessly from his role with Peter & Gordon to Music Executive with the Beatles’ Apple Records, then famously- (as in cover of Rolling Stone magazine level famous)- to Producer and Manager, handling the careers of James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and a host of others. Books abound, documentaries with half-truths (and worse) are all too common, but, now, finally, Mr. Asher tells first hand his tales from the eye of the cultural hurricane in this intimate evening.

“Memoir” includes film footage and photos from Peter’s considerable personal archive, brought to life with a storyteller’s gift, transporting audiences back to the heart of 60s popular culture. Icons such as Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful, Yoko Ono, Carole King, James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt are among the cast of characters in this narrative – along (of course) with the greatly missed Gordon Waller. The evening is filled with the music of Peter & Gordon, including “I Go to Pieces,” “True Love Ways,” and “Lady Godiva.” The songs given to Peter & Gordon by Paul McCartney are also front and center: “Woman,” “I Don’t Want to See You Again,” Nobody I Know,” and “World Without Love,” all of which were US Top 40 hits. Peter presents these timeless classics along with other old favourites from that golden era.

The show brings the audience through the earliest days of Peter’s journey all the way to his efforts in recent years, and projects such as the Peter Asher-produced CD by Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, "The Long Awaited Album", released September 22, 2017. A new project celebrating Elton John’s songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin saw the light of day in 2018, "Revamped" ; among the highlights was Ed Sheeran's take on Candle in The Wind", produced by Mr. Asher. The celebratory collection was a follow up to the Peter Asher-produced special edition of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” -released in March 2014 – which featured Ed Sheeran, Imelda May, Fall Out Boy, and others covering songs from that classic album. Covered as well is Peter’s production of the “Love has Come for You” CD by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell — the title track a Grammy Winner in 2014- and the stage show based on it, “Bright Star,” which garnered 5 Tony nominations in its run on Broadway in 2016. Peter takes you behind the curtain of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where he inducted two old friends, the Rolling Stones’ first manager Andrew Loog Oldham and the Beatles’ Manager Brian Epstein. The PBS special “Buddy Holly: Listen to Me -The Ultimate Buddy Party” is still being aired regularly, and its sister CD, “Listen to Me: Buddy Holly” remains a favorite. His work on soundtracks ("Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Man Of Steel,” “Rush.”, etc), alongside the legendary Hans Zimmer, is touched on also, as well as the 2017 "Hans Zimmer Live!" tour of the USA and Europe that Mr. Asher Directed.

Now, in its tenth year, “Memoir” continues to thrill, as the reviews attest. On a more personal note, friends such as Liza Minelli, Eric Idle, Paul Shaffer, Ray Davies, Bill Wyman, Ken Follett, Edie Brickell, Billy Connolly, Jeff Lynne, Paul Simon, Bob Balaban, Joan Collins, Steve Martin, Ed Sheeran, Tony Shalhoub, Linda Ronstadt, and Michael Feinstein have been among the audiences in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and London that have given standing ovations to “Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the 60s and Beyond.”

Legendary rock band The Sweet shot to the top of the charts in the 1970s with such hits as Ballroom Blitz, Fox on the Run,Love is Like Oxygen, Little Willy, Hellraiser, Teenage Rampage, Blockbuster and Action.

Formed in the U.K. in 1968, the original lineup featured vocalist Brian Connolly, bassist/vocalist Steve Priest, drummer Mick Tucker and guitarist Frank Torpey (later replaced by Mick Stewart and, subsequently, by Andy Scott). In 1973, the band produced their first number one hit, Blockbuster, which went on to achieve platinum status. Sweet toured extensively and continued to chart with Chinn and Chapman compositions.

Fans were increasingly attracted to the heavier rock songs written by the group which appeared on the B sides of their singles, and the struggle for creative control ultimately led to a split with Chinn and Chapman. 1975 Fox on the Run (the band first self-penned single) reached the number two spot in the U.K. and top five in the U.S. charts. The Give Us A Wink album, released in 1976 and featuring the top twenty single Action, attained gold status in America and continued the group’s move toward album-oriented rock. Sweet bounced back onto the charts in 1978, scoring another top ten hit in both the U.S. and the U.K with Love Is Like Oxygen. After Brian Connolly’s departure in 1979, Sweet carried on as a three-piece outfit for three more albums before disbanding in 1981.

In January 2008, Steve Priest assembled his own version of The Sweet in Los Angeles, California. He enlisted fellow Brit Stuart Smith, an old friend and a classically-trained former axeman for the bands Sidewinder and Heaven & Earth, on guitar. L.A. native Richie Onori, Smith’s bandmate in Heaven & Earth, was brought in on drums. The keyboard spot was manned by ex-Crow and World Classic Rockers alumni Stevie Stewart.

After an initial appearance on L.A. rock station 95.5 KLOS’s popular Mark & Brian radio program, the “Are You Ready Steve?” tour kicked off at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood in June, 2008. The band spent the summer playing festivals and gigs throughout the U.S. and Canada, including, among others: Moondance Jam in Walker, MN; headlining at the Rock ‘n’ Resort Festival in N. Lawrence, OH; London, Ontario’s Rock The Park; another headlining gig at Peterborough’s Festival of Lights; the Common Ground Festival in Lansing, MI; and a benefit concert for victims of California’s wildfires at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA.

In January 2009, The Sweet presented at the industry’s Pollstar Awards cocertand played a short set at the Nokia Theater, marking the first time in the ceremony’s history that a band performed at the show. In addition to local gigs at the House of Blues on L.A.’s Sunset Strip and Universal’s Citywalk, 2009 saw the band return to Canada for sold-out shows at the Mae Wilson Theater and Casino Regina, as well as the Nakusp Music Festival and Rockin’ the Fields in Minnedosa, Manitoba. U.S. festivals included Minnesota’s Halfway Jam, Rockin’ the Rivers in Montana (with Pat Travers and Peter Frampton), and two late-summer shows at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The new band recorded a cover version of the Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride,” which was included on Cleopatra Records’ “Abbey Road,” a Fab Four tribute CD that was released in March 2009. April 2009 saw the release of a new two-disc, career-spanning greatest hits album called “Action: The Sweet Anthology,” which was released on Shout Factory Records and received a coveted four-star rating in Rolling Stone Magazine. The band’s “Live! In America,” CD, recorded live by Westwood One at the Morongo Casino on August 30, 2008, was featured on KLOS’s “Front Row”. First sold at shows and later released worldwide in an exclusive deal with Amazon.com, the release garnered favorable reviews in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Report, Classic Rock Revisited and Hard Rock Haven, among others.

Music Night at Bogies | Thom Rotella

October 22, 2019

TUESDAY | October 22, 2019 | 7:30pm | Music Night at Bogies | Thom Rotella

"I remember it like it was yesterday...I'm eight years old and my buddy, Rich and I are looking through the basement window of Mt. Carmel Church (Niagara Falls, NY) where there's a dance going on. I see this multi-headed monster, with arms flailing and all this sound and energy blasting me, and people dancing... it was the first time I saw a live band and I said to myself, man I gotta be a part of this!!!!
-- Thom Rotella

Now a talented instrumentalist and composer, Thom Rotella has achieved both critical and commercial success. He has produced and recorded 13 CDs as a leader that have garnered listeners throughout the world for many years. He has also had a thriving career writing and playing for television and films, as well as being an in-demand session player.

Rotella has performing and recording credits with a wide variety of world-renowned artists across the musical spectrum, including Norah Jones, Donna Summer (Last Dance), Dionne Warwick (I’ll Never love This Way Again),Tanya Tucker (Lizzie and the Rain Man) Frank Sinatra, Cher, The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Lionel Richie, Bette Midler, Luciano Pavarotti, Seth MacFarland, David Foster, Stanley Turrentine, Tom Scott, Rick Braun, Gerald Ablright and Gregg Karukas.

He wrote and performed the score for the movie "Altos"; as well as writing for and performing on such TV shows "Ellen DeGeneres"; "Extra"; "Sex and the City"; and "China Beach." He created original music for television commercials for Ford, Cadillac, Goodyear, Chevrolet and Taco Bell. In addition, he also played guitar on "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," "American Dad," "The Tonight Show" and "The Tracey Ullman Show." He has appeared on numerous movie soundtracks, including "Ted," "Ted 2," "Splash," "Same Time Next Year," "The Gods Must Be Crazy," "Rumblefish," and "Mississippi Masala."

Thom Rotella was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., surrounded by a very musical family. When he was six years old he started playing for the fun of it on his grandfather's guitar. He began serious guitar lessons at the age of ten. As a teenager, Rotella played rock 'n roll, but soon discovered jazz through the recordings of Wes Montgomery. He subsequently attended Ithaca College (as a classical guitar major), and while at Berklee College, studied under Gary Burton (1970-1972). Rotella left Berklee to tour with a lounge band, then moved to Los Angeles where he found a mentor in the legendary studio guitarist Tommy Tedesco. He quickly established himself as a top call studio musician. However, after a few years of this work, he began to miss performing live, so in 1980 moved to New York, where although he continued studio work, he also had more opportunities for live performance.

It was at this time that he was "discovered" by the pioneer digital recording company, DMP (Digital Music Products) and made 3 CDs, (1987-90) all of which found a world-wide market, receiving extensive radio airplay. By 1988, with enough of New York under his musical belt, he moved back to Los Angeles. A 1996 Christmas album for Telarc led to a signing with that label and the recording of 1997s "Can't Stop," which included the top radio hit "What's the Story." Taking a hiatus for a while, in 2002, Rotella returned to the scene with an "homage" to Wes Montgomery, titled "A Day In The Life." That was followed by a straight-ahead jazz release, "Out of the Blues." in 2007 and another Christmas CD, "12" in 2012. He released his first Smooth Jazz radio single in 12 years on January 21, 2019 (he’s proud to say it’s MLK Day) and finished up his first jazz cd in 10 years, “Storyline” which came out February 18 and got to #19 on the Jazz Week national radio airplay chart. His most recent Smooth Jazz single reached #1 on the Billboard radio chart. Titled “Eddie’s Ready” it was produced by fellow guitarist Chris Standring. He is in pre-production on his followups to “Storyline” and to “Eddie’s Ready”, both slated for an early 2020 release…

He continues performing with his 4tet, his Quintet with sax legend Ernie Watts, his Trio and his 7tet at the Baked Potato, Vibrato and as a featured guest at John Pisano’s Guitar Night.
Rotella says: "There is nothing more fun than playing live, because I'm able to get an instantaneous response to what we're doing as a band, and to see how that moves people emotionally. The interplay between these musicians is incredible, and always leads to surprises."

Rotella continues to surprise and lead his audiences into often-uncharted territory -- but always with that sense of adventure and passion that have been a cornerstone of his musical life.
